29. George Washington4 Hugueley (George W.3, Abraham2, Job1) was born in Wilson Co., MO February 3, 1844. George died April 19, 1920 in Cross Timbers, Hickory Co., MO, buried in Jordan C, at 76 years of age.
He married Caroline M. Portice Portis in Cooper Co., MO, July 29, 1866. Caroline was born in
Randolph Co., NC October 12, 1843. She was the daughter of Isham Portice Portis and Elizabeth P. Hoover.
She married Thomas Jenson in Polk Co., MO, January 12, 1873. Caroline died March 16, 1929 in McAlester, OK,
at 85 years of age. George W. was about 9 years old when he made the wagon trip from Wilson Co., TN to Cross Timbers, Hickory Co., MO. It
was probably quite an exciting trip for a 9 year old boy. George was known by the nicknames of Foss or Potter, depending on
different family members. Some called him Foss, others called him Potter. According to family recollections, at about the age of
16 or 17, just after the Civil War had started, George and 3 other boys were riding horseback from Cross Timbers to Prescott, MO to enlist.
Approximately 5 miles north of Prescott near a curve in the road, they were set upon by Union soldiers locally called Bushwhackers. The
attack resulted in 2 of the boys being killed, 1 disappeared through the woods, and George had been shot in the leg and left for dead.
After the bushwhackers left, George managed to pull himself across the ground to the house of a widow woman up the road. He survived the
attack but lost his right leg about mid-thigh. His divorce from Caroline was apparently not very "friendly" as stories handed
down on her side told of George coming from Hickory Co where he lived to Polk Co where she lived and "stealing" the 2 children which had
been born of their 6 year marriage. Caroline then rode to Hickory Co. apparently to a river where she was ferried across and asked the
ferrier to wait for her return. When she returned on her horse/mule, she had the 2 children with her. One was a boy, the other a girl.
Caroline remarried and after a few years moved with her new husband to Arkansas and finally on into Indian Territory, OK. The 2
children never saw their father again. George never remarried, living with various relatives for the remainder of his life. In 1870, he
was living with his sister Rachel Ashley and her husband Clem. In 1920 when he died, he was living with William (Bill) Russell and his wife
Martha Jane (a niece to George). George is buried in the Jordan Cemetery. His grave sits in the back corner of this very small
cemetery underneath the shade of a large tree. He has a very nice tombstone which was probably paid for by Bill Russell. His grave is
tended and decorated by members of the family yearly.
